I Quit My Job, Sold Everything I Owned and Bought a One-Way Ticket to India

Ten years ago, the world called me crazy.  I changed my life by trusting my inner voice, even when almost nobody else understood.

10 October 2016.

Exactly ten years ago today, I was standing at Heathrow Airport in London, holding a one-way ticket to India, feeling like the happiest and the richest person in the world.

And I was absolutely terrified.

I had just made one of the most difficult decisions of my life. I had quit my job, sold everything I owned and decided to leave behind the life I knew to travel to the other side of the world, without a return ticket and without knowing what would happen next.

The world thought I was crazy. And perhaps, from the outside, it did look that way. Why would I give up well paid job, my belongings and the security of a familiar life to venture into the scary unknown?

But something inside me was telling me to go, and for the first time in my life, I was ready to listen.

Looking back today, I can say that was the most difficult decision of my life. But that decision changed everything. It was the beginning of my journey around the world, but even more importantly, it was the beginning of a deeper journey towards myself.

When the life you know no longer feels right

As I shared in my previous blog, discovering Yoga had already begun to change my life. I was learning to understand myself, recognise my patterns and question the beliefs I had spent years accepting as truth. I was slowly realising that I didn’t have to keep living according to other people’s expectations or follow a path simply because it was familiar.

I was becoming curious about what else was possible.

I wanted to explore the world, experience different cultures, learn, grow and discover who I could become when I gave myself permission to choose my own direction. I knew that the life I was living no longer felt right for me, and I was no longer willing to ignore that feeling.

I didn’t have a detailed plan for my future. I couldn’t explain exactly where I was going or what I wanted my life to look like in five or ten years. All I knew was that I needed to take a step towards something different.

Of course, I was scared. Leaving behind a familiar life means leaving behind the things that make it predictable. You don’t know how everything will work out, whether your decisions will lead you where you hope to go, or whether you will regret taking the risk.

But I had reached a point where staying in a life that no longer felt like mine was becoming more uncomfortable than facing the uncertainty of creating something new.

So I made my decision. I quit my job, sold everything I owned and bought a one-way ticket to India. And on 10 October 2016, I stood at Heathrow Airport, terrified and excited, ready to discover what life had waiting for me.

The freedom of trusting yourself

I will never forget how I felt that day. I had very little in terms of possessions, but I felt incredibly rich because, for the first time, I was making a decision that was entirely my own.

I wasn’t waiting for somebody to give me permission. I wasn’t trying to convince everyone around me that I was making the right choice. I wasn’t asking the world to guarantee that everything would work out.

I was listening to my own voice, and I was willing to follow it.

Not everyone understood my decision. Some people thought I was making a mistake, and others couldn’t understand why I would give up the security I had for something so uncertain. I could have allowed their opinions to stop me, but I was beginning to understand that other people’s expectations and fears didn’t have to determine the direction of my life.

Other people can share their perspectives, but they cannot know exactly what we feel inside or what our lives are asking of us. Sometimes, we need to become quiet enough to hear our own voice beneath all the noise.

That was something Yoga had been teaching me. Through my practice, I was learning to slow down, become more aware of myself and recognise the difference between reacting out of fear and making a conscious choice out of love towards myself.

I couldn’t see the whole path ahead of me, but I could feel that I needed to take the next step. And that was enough.

The journey that changed my life

Since that day, I have travelled to more than fifty countries and lived in seven different ones. I have experienced different cultures, met extraordinary people, explored unfamiliar environments and learned more than I could ever have imagined while standing at that airport.

Travel has expanded my understanding of the world and shown me that there are so many different ways to live. What we consider normal is often shaped by the environment in which we grow up, and what we believe is possible can change dramatically when we allow ourselves to experience something new.

But the most important journey has never been the one measured by the number of countries I have visited. It has been the journey within.

Over time, I developed a deeper trust in myself. I created habits that supported my wellbeing, built a strong and capable body through Yoga and movement, and developed a relationship with myself grounded in love, respect and acceptance.

I have lived without smoking or drinking for more than eleven years, and I have created a lifestyle around the things I genuinely love: Yoga, movement, travelling, teaching, creating and working with people. Today, I am a Yoga teacher and life realignment mentor, sharing my practice around the world and hosting workshops and retreats.

If you had asked me ten years ago to imagine this life, I wouldn’t have been able to describe it. My rational mind could only work with what it already knew. It couldn’t possibly map out all the experiences, opportunities and discoveries that were waiting for me.

I didn’t arrive here because I had everything figured out. I arrived here because I kept listening to my inner voice and taking steps in the direction that felt right.

And this is something I want you to understand: you don’t have to know exactly where you are going to begin creating a life you love.

Your dream life is built in the little moments

So, why am I sharing this story with you?

Because I want you to know that so much more is possible than you might currently imagine. You don’t need to quit your job, sell everything you own or buy a one-way ticket to India to transform your life. Your journey will be your own, and your next step might look completely different from mine.

What matters is that you start listening to yourself and taking those little steps towards the life you want to create.

We often imagine transformation as one huge decision, a dramatic moment when everything suddenly changes. But looking back, I can see that the woman who stood at Heathrow Airport didn’t become that person overnight. She was shaped by thousands of small choices that came before that day.

Waking up a little earlier to practise Yoga. Showing up on my mat every day, even when it would have been easier not to. Choosing habits that supported my wellbeing. Becoming curious about my thoughts and emotions instead of automatically escaping them. Learning to keep promises to myself and making choices that felt good for me, even when nobody else could see the difference.

Those moments might have seemed insignificant at the time, but they were building something much bigger: trust in myself.

Every time I showed up for myself, I strengthened the relationship I had with myself. Every conscious choice helped me move towards a life that felt more aligned with who I was becoming. Gradually, those little decisions changed the direction of my life.

Life doesn’t change only through the big decisions. It changes through the little choices we make every single day.

You might not see the results immediately, but that doesn’t mean nothing is happening. You are creating habits, building confidence and learning to trust yourself. You are becoming someone who can make different choices because you have practised doing so, again and again.

And one day, you might look around and realise that the life you are living is very different from the one you once thought you were stuck with.

That is how I began creating the life of my dreams. Not by having a perfect plan, but by listening to that little voice within me and following it, one step at a time.

I still live this way today. I continue to learn, grow, question myself and make conscious choices about the life I want to create. I don’t need to know every detail of my future to take responsibility for the direction in which I am moving.

And neither do you.

Ten years later, I am grateful I listened

Today, on 10 October 2026, I keep thinking about the woman who stood at Heathrow Airport exactly ten years ago.

I am so proud of her. And so grateful to her for having the courage to listen to your inner voice when the world didn’t understand. I thank her for the willingness to leave the familiar behind and explore what was possible. Thank her for trusting herself enough to take that leap, even though she were terrified.

Because the life I live today is the result of that decision and all the little choices that followed.

Ten years ago. I didn’t know where I would end up. I simply knew that I wanted to find out what was possible when I stopped living according to other people’s expectations and started listening to myself.

And I am so glad I did.

Perhaps you are standing at your own crossroads right now. Maybe something in your life no longer feels right, or perhaps there is a dream you keep postponing because you cannot see how to make it happen.

You don’t have to figure everything out today. You don’t need everyone’s approval, and you don’t have to change your entire life overnight.

Start with one little step. Make one conscious choice. Show up for yourself today, and then do it again tomorrow. Trust that those moments matter, even when you cannot yet see where they are leading. Everything is possible when you are willing to discover what is possible for you. You are allowed to question, explore, change direction and create a life that feels true to who you are. You are allowed to dream beyond what your rational mind can currently explain.

You don’t need to know the entire journey. You just need to be willing to begin.

Ten years ago, I bought a one-way ticket to India. I had no idea where that decision would take me, but I trusted the voice within me enough to follow it.

And today, I am deeply grateful for the life that unfolded because I did.

Love & Namaste,

Ania ☀️
